Olivia (Alice "Roxie" Rodriguez) assesses her obstacle

[27 WORDS]

In this short dramedy, we follow 12-year-old Olivia’s attempt to use a tampon for the very first time in her family's beach house rental bathroom circa 2008.

Olivia (Alice "Roxie" Rodriguez) looks at her family before joining them on the beach.

[108 WORDS]

Crimson Wave follows 12-year-old Olivia in her struggle to use a tampon for the very first time. While on vacation with her family at the Jersey Shore in 2008, the unimaginable happens. As Olivia gets ready for the beach, we follow her cringe-worthy struggle that many menstruators can relate to.

As she attempts to navigate the complex instructions, we laugh, cry, and rage alongside her. In this comedy of errors, we follow Olivia through this milestone moment in her family's beach house rental bathroom circa 2008. This short dramedy is a hot pink love letter to our younger selves and the menstrual moments that we will never forget.

Let’s journey back to a suburban summer in 2008...where I used a tampon for the very first time. Or, more accurately, failed to use a tampon for the very first time.

Olivia (Alice "Roxie" Rodriguez) throws her last box of tampons across the room in frustration.

I distinctly recall the sound of the ocean while my mother shouted directions at me through the bathroom door and, attempt after attempt, I just couldn’t figure it out. Eventually, defeated, I gave up and used a pad, waddling to the beach with a towel wrapped around my waist.

As I continue sharing this film, it is such an incredible treat to hear others share adorable, laughable, and cringe-worthy stories of their first tampon experience. I think all menstruating people remember their first time venturing into the world of tampons.

No matter how prepared we think we are, the reality of the attempt is always very different. It usually stems from circumstantial necessity, but comes with a lot of discomfort, confusion, and cringe. That feeling is exactly what this film encapsulates in a nostalgic, hot pink love letter to our younger selves and the early 2000s.

"The bathroom is such a sacred place to a young girl - being a place where you can’t be disturbed but also a place that your body has always existed in and the place you notice it changes in. Getting your period is horrifying, empowering and all together confusing - and I think you succeeded in capturing that with this film.”

 - Colleen Dodge, Designer & Filmmaker

“I thought this was very sensitive and it put me in a headspace that I have a new found empathy for. You used the space well and it lead to an effective beach sequence when you got outside. This was a really smart and focused short concept with impact.”
